Mechanics require a set of tools to work on automobiles. There are
different kinds of mechanical tools available to ease the task of
working on different types of automobile engines. Most of the necessary
tools are made available in packaged kits in various stores but still
there are many more tools required by mechanics for smooth and easy
repairs of various kinds of automobiles.
Some of the most important types of mechanical tools used by the mechanics are as follows:
Hand tools: Among the most important tools required by mechanics
include the hand tools. Hand tools are of different varieties such as
screw drivers, wrenches, utility knives, hammers, pliers, hacksaws, wire
stripping tools and wire cutters.
Wrenches are considered one of
the handiest tools used by mechanics. It is available in sets and in
different sizes. Used mainly for removing bolts and nuts, the wrenches
are available in different varieties. However, there are two types of
wrenches which are quite essential in every mechanic's tool box. Allen
wrenches and the air ratchet wrenches are the two most essential tools
though the air ratchet wrench is used for tougher jobs.
Mechanical
tools also include pullers of different sizes and varieties such as the
slide hammers, ball joint separators, gear puller tools and the bearing
pullers. Parts of the automobile which are being removed are protected
by using pullers of various types.
Screwdrivers are also included
among the essential mechanical tools as there can be a variety of
screws of different sizes and shapes to be removed and fixed.
Screwdrivers of various lengths are required in addition to Philips and
flat head screw drivers. Other types of screwdrivers include the
bendable screwdrivers and magnetic tipped screwdrivers.
Voltmeter: used for checking batteries and identifying its problems. It
is also used to monitor the voltage and analyse the problems of
electrical components in an automobile.
Scan tool: one of the
most useful mechanical tools used for diagnosing problems in an
automobile is a scan tool. It can be connected to an on board computer
to analyse the problems.
Fluorescent drop cords: mechanical tools
also include fluorescent drop cords which are very useful. These drop
cords are necessary while working underneath a vehicle. Compared to the
ordinary bulbs, the drop cords are safer to use as it seldom breaks and
never get heated. The drop cords emanate light in large amounts.
The Use of Other Mechanical Tools
In
addition to the above mentioned, there are many more useful mechanical
tools which are considered essential for a tool kit. Different types of
air compressor tools are also used by mechanics to ease their tasks.
These compressors can be attached to various gadgets such as drills,
spray guns and so forth. Other necessary items include a flashlight, a
creeper, a hydraulic jack and funnels.
Mechanics may also require
battery tester, charger and a refrigerant leak detector among other
tools. All these tools are indispensable to a mechanic and can be bought
from many of the online stores listed in the business portals at
affordable prices.

Selecting Basic Tools to Start Gardening With
The size of your garden and how you plan to start gardening will to a degree dictated which garden tools you need.
Before choosing any garden tools, there are three things to look for;
Balance
If the garden tool you use is not well balanced then work gets much harder for you, it may not seem a lot but ever little helps - and the easier it is the more enjoyable!
To find the balance point of the tool simply hold it in your hand and find the point at which it balances, this should not be too close to the blade and as close to the middle of the tool as possible.
Weight
Weight is not just about a tool being too heavy; it can be too light as well. If the weight is wrong it can
affect your confidence in it. Too heavy and you cannot wield it properly. Too light and you don't have the weight to carry it through its stroke without extra effort from you.
Size
The size of the gardening tool is not about how much mud or earth you can shift in a singe stroke, and more about comfort and not doing yourself an injury. Choose a tool suitable in height for you to use in a comfortable position or if a hand tool, one that fits the size of your hands comfortably.
Above all gardening should be enjoyable, and if you're comfortable the work is that much easier!
For every gardener the most basic tools you will need are a Trowel and Hand Fork. These gardening hand tools come in various materials and quality, and of course costs but you should with proper care, keep them for many years - So in my opinion you are always best going for quality. The choices available are fairly straightforward but I have broken them down below.
Blade:
o Steel
o Stainless Steel
o Copper/ Bronze
o Plastic
Handle:
o Wooden
o Metal
o Plastic / Rubber
Prices range from a few pounds to upwards of twenty pounds for nice gift quality ones.
The Fork and trowel will be sufficient for the gardener who only has a few pots on their balcony or a window box, but if you have a garden or yard then you are going to need a few more.
Next in the tool shed for the budding gardener should be a digging spade, now again these come in various materials and qualities But the basic materials for the blade are; carbon steel or stainless steel the later of these being lighter and easier to maintain, but of course often pricier. The handle will generally be of wood, plastic or metal this is one of preference, but care should be taken to ensure the handle grip is comfortable to hold and there are no edges to rub you (sore hands soon make for hard work).
There are many different takes on the hand grip but it really only boils down to two; T-shape or Y-shape. T-shaped handles are where the shaft of the tool meets the handle and forms a simple T. Y shape is where the shaft is split and opened out, and the hand grip inserted between the two halves, the choice is yours.
A Digging Fork is also going to be needed, the same materials and handle styles apply just the same as the spade, often you will see these two sold as a set. Just be sure that they are both right for you if buying like this.
Another tool that is essential for the new gardener are secateurs, like scissors only designed to cut foliage and small branches. Secateurs range in price, quality and sizes so choose carefully. The best option here is get a set that you find comfortable and can open fully in one hand, and then close again. Beware of the cheaper plastic moulded handles as the can have a habit of pinching your hand when you close them and soon become uncomfortable to use.
Other items that the novice gardener will find indispensable are a watering can (with rose - to sprinkle the
plants in a controlled manner).
The tools mentioned are a basic collection for the new gardener, and will allow you to accomplish most tasks, there a many gadgets and specialty tools on the market that as your skills develop so will you desire to own some of them, but to start with stick to the basics and happy gardening

Using Hand Or Power Tools
Both hand and power tools are used by many
professionals and amateurs. Although power tools are preferred in many
industrial environments for their efficiency, others still use hand
tools for more accurate and finer tasks. Both types have benefits in
terms of the tasks that need to be done and the industry. In general,
for workers doing single and repetitive tasks, tools like table, chop,
and band saws give the most efficiency. Similarly, when workers are
needed to work with hard concrete or rocks, hand tools with man power
don't provide enough force, and ones like heavy-duty drivers and hammers
are the only ones available for the task. But when you think of finer
tasks like wood or metal working, hand tools are often used for finer
tasks.
Power tools, much like a sewing machine for making clothing, are needed for efficiency. Think of all the time that would be wasted by making cuts with a hand saw. As these have motors attached, saws, for example, are capable of cutting through materials at a much quicker speed than a saw powered by one or more workers. The accuracy, particularly with saws, is enhanced by those, like saws, that give a cleaner cut. Efficiency also includes the ability to do tasks that workers can't do alone. Tools like drivers, hammers, and drillers are designed in some cases to have additional power to cut through rock, concrete, and other hard materials without getting damaged.
In general, power tools are preferable to hand opeated ones, but some industries still incorporate these for finer tasks. Woodworking and metalworking are such industries that use hand tools to create flatter, more even surfaces and finer crafted cuts that simply can't be done by those powered by motors. In addition to giving workers more control in these industries, they give more precision for finer tasks. Whether a worker is using a hand planer or a cutting tool, both give more control in woodworking.

Hand Woodworking - The Joys Of This Ancient Craft
For thousands of years our ancestors have crafted wood by hand, using
the most rudimentary hand woodworking tools, and achieving amazing,
intricate and artistic results. In bygone days, especially early in the
last century and the late19th century, it was an era of supreme
craftsmanship. These skilled and dedicated craftsmen built not only
beautiful furniture and houses, elaborate horse-drawn carriages and
functional implements, but also crafted mighty seagoing vessels with
tall masts and beautiful lines - all by hand and without the aid of
power tools or the fancy array of smart attachments available in today's
modern world.
Hand woodworking is an age-old craft that has seen a steady revival in recent years - partly because it is an eco-friendly method of working, and partly because it is deeply satisfying to work raw wood with nothing more than the skill of your hands, the sweat of your brow, and the sharp cutting edge of a blade.
The trick to working wood by hand is to take it slowly. Don't be in a hurry. One thing our ancestors had in their favor was time, as the world moved at a slower pace back then. In modern times, we have been programmed for instant gratification - we want everything "yesterday". But if you're considering hand woodworking, you're going to have to accept that it is a slow although richly rewarding process. Ease into working with hand tools slowly. Take your time and don't allow yourself to get frustrated. Start a simple project. Get some lumber and start planing, making joints by hand, and sand and finish the project by hand.
Hand Tools
The essence of working wood by hand is good quality hand tools. You are also going to have to learn how to sharpen your tools as sharp tools are crucial to this traditional process. Knowing how to sharpen your tools is like learning how to tune a fine musical instrument. The skill comes with practice, over time.
The beginner hand woodworker needs a basic set of tools such as a set of high-quality chisels, a jackplane, and a good crosscut saw. Later on, as your skills progress and you tackle more ambitious projects, you will need to add a fillister plane, a hand ripsaw, a double-toothed mortising gauge, and a good set of mortising chisels to make mortise and tenon joints. Many, (and probably most) of these tools will not be found in your local hardware store, so you'll have to do a bit of digging around. Some can be found in antique shops, but most can be found online. There are a handful of companies out there specializing in manufacturing quality hand tools for traditional craftsman.

Woodworker Tools
In my last article I talked about the basics of wood selection for a
woodworking project. In this article, we will discuss the tools needed
for woodworking project. As in any thing we do, whether it is fixing or
repairing things around the house, using the right tool is always the
universal rule rather than the exception. It is important to realize
that using the right tool not only gets the job done correctly but also
gives you safety in your work.
The range and list of woodworker tools can be quite huge and elaborate. To buy every piece of woodworker tools out there will cost you a hefty sum or may even punch a large hole in your bank account. The woodworker tools can be generally categorized into 3 basic types:
Hand tools
Power tools
Machinery
Hand tools are basically tools which you operate with your hand without any external power or electricity. These will include tools such as hammer, chisel, saw, level, try square, triangles, tape measure, sandpaper and rasps. Power tools and machinery must be operated using external or portable power source. These electric-driven tools are definitely more expensive, though some of the portable power tools are quite affordable. Portable power tools allow you to be more flexible and mobile when you are working, rather than worrying about entangling of the cables and wires around your workspace. In addition, power tools and machinery will definitely speed things up for you in your project. And, some of the machinery will allow you to do fancy works, which otherwise would be difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish using only hand tools.
For a beginner woodworker, it's not necessary to have a complete set of tools to start your hobby. You only need a basic set of hand tools. Hand tools can go a long way in your woodworking craft even without power tools or machinery. Here is a list of basic tools for the beginner woodworker:
Claw hammer
Wood chisels
Screwdrivers
Levels
Try Square
Framing Squares
Triangles
Tape measures
Sandpaper
Screws and Nails
Clamps
Hand Plane
Vises
Rasps
Glue
Carpenter's Pencils
Safety Glasses or Goggles
The list of woodworker tools above should be sufficient for any beginners to start working on their hobby. Please do not overlook the last item, safety glasses, on the list. Though safety glass is not a tool, it is absolutely necessary to wear them whenever you are using tools or doing work which is potentially dangerous. We will cover this aspect of woodworking in future article.
Compare your prices before you buy your tools. If you are serious about woodworking as a long term hobby, it will be wise to get a good set of tools which will last you for years.

Hand Tool Safety Protects Artists from Injury
Since childhood, many have discovered the joy of creation through art.
Working with the various materials is an exciting and creative venture
for many artists. However, research has shown that an artist's craft has
the potential to adversely affect his/her health. Art materials and
supplies, improperly used, can cause physical injury.
A fundamental aspect of many art businesses and institutions is the hand tool. While indispensable to the artist, hand tools are also involved in many injuries to artists. According to Accident Facts, hand tools are involved in 6 percent of all compensated work injuries. This figure increases to 14 percent for non-compensated work injuries. Average hand tool injury costs can run approximately $1250 - this is only counting the direct costs and not the indirect injury costs such as lost production.
Hand tool injuries can most often be traced to the improper use or maintenance of the hand tool. Ways to avoid non-powered hand tool injuries include:
1. Make sure to use the right tool for the job. Examples of misuse of tools include using a wrench as a hammer, pliers as a wrench, knife as a saw, claw hammer as a ballpeen hammer, screwdriver as a chisel, etc.
2. Ensure you have the correct size tool.
3. Individuals using tools should be trained in basic safety and proper use of the tool.
4. Artists must keep their tools in good condition. Broken or worn tools should be repaired or discarded. Report defective equipment to the necessary supervisor, if applicable.
5. Use your tool the way it was intended. For instance, drive a wood chisel outward and away from your body.
6. When using a safety knife or utility knife, cut away from the body and keep hands and body clear of the knife stroke.
7. Razor blades and utility knife blades should be disposed of in a puncture-resistant container.
8. Store tools in a safe place. Many accidents have been caused by tools falling from overhead, sharp tools carried in pockets, or tools left in toolboxes with the cutting edges exposed. Ensure the tool is stored in its proper place and that sharp edges or blades are protected or enclosed to prevent contact.
9. Hand tools such as chisels and punches must be reconditioned or replaced as necessary.
10. Keep tool cutting edges sharp so the tool will move smoothly without binding or skipping. Dull tools can be more hazardous than sharp tools.
11. Wear other personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, appropriate shoes, gloves, etc.
12. Consider ergonomically designed tools to fit the tool to the worker - especially those tools used frequently and repetitively during the day.
The work of many artists, such as potters, glassblowers weavers, involves repetitive motion. Repetitive motion, particularly of the hands, wrists and arms may lead to painful inflammation of muscles, tendons, and nerves over time and cause eventual deterioration of those tissues. Symptoms associated with repetitive-motion disorders can include pain, warmth, swelling, and difficulty moving the joint involved. Grip positions that use high-force finger pinching along with a bent wrist have been associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Hand polishing and sanding, and drawing and painting in awkward positions are examples of high-risk repetitive tasks. Repetitive motion disorders can be disabling if not treated early.
To prevent these injuries, select appropriate tools and lay work out in more neutral positions while performing tasks. It's also a good idea to take frequent breaks to stretch muscles and schedule work to alternate tasks.
Back injuries often occur from lifting heavy objects such as sculptures and lithography stones. Whenever possible, use mechanical aides such as hoists and dollies to move heavy objects. Artists should always practice good lifting techniques including flexing knees, keeping the back straight, hold the load close to the body, and lifting with the legs. Artists should never lift and twist at the same time.

Hand and Power Tools for Any Workshop
Hand and power tools are important for any DIY enthusiast. Hand tools
can include anything from woodworking to small garden tools. Power
tools are electrically controlled and may have engines. Hand tools are
arguably more complicated but that does not mean that they are not as
useful. Indeed, there are a collection of both hand and power tools
which are integral for any workshop.
In terms of hand tools one of the most prominent includes screw guns. These are different to screwdrivers as they are quicker at repairing. In terms of hanging things and repairing loose screws, the screw gun is very important.
Another key hand tool any workshop should have is the hammer. They do not require batteries to work and are strong and sturdy in the way they are built. Hammers are typically used for nails, rather than screws and can fix broken wood materials. There are several different hammers, but all mainly serve the same purpose, at least one in a workshop is an integral tool needed.
The chisel is another hand tool that should be in any workshop. It is mainly used as a woodworking tool. A chisel needs to be perfectly sharpened to work at its most effective. It can clear out waste from joints. The main uses of chisels include: removing wood when making joints, and removing thin edges off wood.
The screwdriver is simple for removing screws that have either been put in the wrong place or put in at a certain angle. More so, although it is a hand tool, it requires minimal strength as on average six turns will get the screw out depending on its size.
Power tools are usually powered by electricity, fuel, hydraulics and so on. They make tools like saws work quicker than the strain caused by hand. A cleaner cut on motored powered saws give greater accuracy. There are several variations of powered saws and these include the petrol chainsaw, jigsaws and circular saws. Usually power saws are much easier and intricate in terms of where you want to cut.
For any workshop it is important to have a good electric drill. The majority of these drills are multipurpose and usually the bigger the drill the more powerful it is. There is a speed control feature allowing you to use the drill at your own pace. There are many electric drills ranging from electric rotary drills, cordless drills, angle drills and SDS drills. It is one of the most prominent DIY tools out there and with a wide variety available for different purposes.
Sanders are also important power tools. Without sanders, wood would not be smooth and the sharp edges would remain. This creates a newly smooth wooden surface. The different types of sanders include belt sanders, disk sanders and drum sanders.
These are just some of the power and hand tools that are essential for any workshop. There are several variations of hand tools which can be used as power tools. The key example is the saw, but this is a matter of choice. People may decide to stick to the hand tool version for convenience or depending on the difficulty of the job being done. Therefore, in this sense, both hand tools and power tools work hand in hand.

Stanley Woodworking Tools Just Seem To Keep Going
Unfortunately today it seems as if the woodworking hand tool has very
much become the second-class citizen in many tool shops around the
world. It seems that more and more people are ready to use power tools
such as table saws and band saws for carrying out those tasks that were
once only done using hand tools.
Although power tools can be very useful, there is much that can be said for the hand tool as well. In fact one company that seems to keep going even in this world of power mad woodworkers is Stanley Woodworking Hand Tools.
The Stanley Company has been around now for more than 160 years and is familiar to people in more than 130 different countries across the globe. Certainly the name of Stanley Tools has been familiar to woodworkers and homeowners for all this time.
Originally the company was set up by Frederick T Stanley in New Britain, Connecticut to produce door bolts. But since it humble beginnings the company has now flourished into one of the biggest suppliers of locks, woodworking and hand tools that is easily recognizable around the world.
Certainly if you were to look in any good woodworking workshop around the world and not just a professional one you will find that they will have an assortment of various Stanley woodworking hard tools in their tool racks or boxes.
Certainly one of the most successful items that Stanley has ever produced is the Stanley Plane. Since the 1870's Stanley have sold millions of their cast iron hand planes much of which are based on patents that they purchased from Leonard Bailey of Boston, Massachusetts. They so perfected this tool that many modern day plane makers still use a lot of the same principals in their tools.
Since the first plane was manufactured the Stanley woodworking hand tool division of Stanley has purchased many other patents as well as entire plane manufacturing companies and have also continued to improve the design of their planes right up until the first half of the 20th Century.
It is because the Stanley company has been around for so long and are so well associated with the world of woodworking and producing such high quality hand tools that they seem to be able to compete effectively with power tools.
So when you are next considering purchasing some good quality equipment for your carpentry workshop then I would suggest that you look no further than buying some Stanley woodworking hand tools.

Finding Old Tools Can Be As Much Fun As Using Them
Once you get caught up using woodworking hand tools it is hard to stop.
Like any other modern day woodworker I needed my table saw. I thought I
could not get anything done without my power tools.
As I slowly discovered hand tools I fell in love with them. The more I used them the better I realized they fit my style of woodworking. The slow easy pace using hand tools fits my woodworking style like a glove.
I started searching for hand tools and found out they were not that easy to come by. Sure you could buy new tools but the old ones seemed to be better. The used tools are often found at a fraction of the price of new planes and saws. The quality of the old tools is usually very good.
You have to sometimes go out of your way to get a great deal on used woodworking hand tools. Some of the places I always look at are my local flea market and antique stores. Yard sales can often bring unexpected surprises and do not forget to check yourclassified ads. This article will share a few tips to help you find those great old hand tools of yesterday.
Often you will have good luck at the flea market. If you get lucky you will come across a booth where the guy has some old tools and does not have a clue what they are worth. You can get some great bargains when you run across this situation. Usually there will be a tool dealer or two where you can find some good tools. They will more than likely not be as good a bargain because the dealer will know the value of what he is selling.
Antique stores will often be your best bet in finding old tools. Almost always there will be some old tools in those glass cases. Shop around all the different antique stores and one will almost always stand out as the best place to buy tools. When you find this store visit often, as you never know what you may find.
Yard sales are even better than flea markets in most cases as the seller very seldom knows what the old tools are worth. He may have had these tools lying around for a long time and is glad to see you haul them off. It is harder to find many good quality tools at a yard sale but you never know what you will find.
It is a long shot but once in a while you will find someone selling an old tool collection in the paper. It is worth the time it takes to glance at the classified ads every once in a while.
Finding old tools is as much fun as using them. There is a great satisfaction in finding a fifty-year-old tool and restoring it so it can be used again.

tools. However you do not only need power tools in order to successfully
complete many different projects, you should also consider buying some
hand woodworking tools. It can be confusing to know exactly which tools

Tracking down great priced handtools
It can be very expensive to set up your own woodworking shop. It may be tempting just to rush out and buy the cheapest hand tools that you can lay your hands on in order to save money. However you really do get what you pay for. It is a false economy to buy these cheap tools as they are unlikely to last anywhere near as long as high quality tools. If possible stick to a reliable brand name such as Armstrong, Stanley or snap on tools. It is very important to consider buying quality tools for long term use.
It's a sensible idea to think about buying used tools. You just have to make sure that they are in good condition. Very old German hand tools are made to a very high quality and are pretty easy to track down. The quality of these older tools are often much better than the cheaper newer tools. It is important that you make sure that you carefully inspect the condition of these used tools.
You can find hand tools at local yard sales, take a look in your local newspaper to see if anyone is selling anything you might be interested in. Also take note of any garage sales which are being held.
Another really good way to find tools for yourself is to go to flea markets. These will offer many different tools in the same place which will mean you don't have to travel to different yard sales to buy everything you need. It is normally possible to negotiate on price at flea markets, so you've got to be willing to negotiate!
The best way to get cheap tools at flea markets is to go towards the end of the day. Many people will be more willing to reduce the prices to get rid of them at the end of the day. You might get a discount if you buy all of your tools from the same person.

Gardening Hand Tools - The Gardener's Tool Box
Gardening can be a rewarding hobby, but as with any endeavor, the proper
tools are essential in order to complete the job successfully and with
the least amount of hassle. Tools make the work easier to do and worth
doing. There are some basics that will keep gardening enjoyable and less
stressful.
The essential working tools for gardening are these: a broom and a rake for cleaning workspace after garden chores; a lopper for the hard to reach places in the garden where you need to make cutting adjustments, and wiring for trailing plants like beans and tomatoes that may need extra support. For larger gardens, a wheelbarrow is a necessity to move the harvest stuff and also equipment and tools within the garden space. A set of trowels and hand shovels make easy work for holes and work that is done close to the ground. A good garden hose and a soaker hose are essential for the watering that is done for larger gardens and those times the weather is not cooperating in the precipitation department. Serious eco-gardeners harvest rainwater, and a barrel or water keeper might be a consideration as well. Gloves and protective clothing, as well as face mask protection are considerations in doing pruning, weeding, and spreading fertilizer. Good cotton string and a heavy industrial extension cord are good additions to the garden tool box as well.
Larger gardens need a large shovel for digging. A spade is an indispensable tool as it can make digging deep holes and trenches a lot easier. A gardener should have these things available for year round use as they are useful for plants, and vegetables as well as landscaping needs. The list extends to a good pair of pruners, and hedging shears, a fertilizer spreader to use for the composting and other fertilizing needs, and a good multipurpose saw as well. This equipment covers pretty much the gamut of gardening tasks that need to be done regularly and some of those that are for strictly upkeep.
More expensive purchase are a tiller, a blower and a weed whacker but again rummage sales and estate sales could secure those for a reasonable prices. Finally small hand tools, such as trowels, shovels, and forks round out that for small gardening tasks, and weeding. Finally, a small push mower complete the garden tool box. You will want to have a secure and weatherproof place to store and protect your equipment too. Now the work and joy of gardening can begin.

Different Types Of Hand Tools And Their Uses
There are many choices when it comes to hand tools. A tool can be found
for things such as woodworking and garden along with a variety of power
tools. Hands tools have been used for thousands of years and have
evolved over time into more useful items that helps get a particular job
done.
Woodworking is usually done with specialized items such as planes and things of this type as well as standard items such as a hammer and saw. This type of project does not necessarily require specialized woodworking tools. However many items are made specifically for working with wood. When searching for a tool for woodworking you can usually find them at a craft shop or sometimes home improvement stores.
There is a wide variety of power tools available for hundreds of uses. Tools of this sort have many uses ranging from a power screwdriver to help out around the house to a very big construction tool such as a jack hammer as well as everything in between. There are also several different types of power supplies for these including electric, air and battery powered.
Garden tools are very useful and also offer a wide range of choices. Shovels, rakes and trowels are useful to help with the planting and weeding of the garden. For different types of gardens there are different types of tools available. Most of the items used in a garden are not powered by anything but a person. The use of power tools in the garden can cause damage to the plants.
Using a tool to help to complete a job has long been useful to man. Even in the beginning of time there were inventors who created a tool when the need arose. When a task came up that they couldn't do on their own, they found something that would help them and created a tool for that specific purpose. In the beginning a tool may be something as simple as a sharpened stone or a rounded rock that would help to do the chore at hand.
Today we have developed more sophisticated tools that have more specialized uses. However, some of the same ideas that helped create a tool to help with tasks in the beginning are still used today.
For example, a hammer is one of the most commonly used pieces of equipment found today. The uses today are not different from the uses of yesterday, however the tool itself is very different. In the beginning a hammer was nothing more than a rounded rock used to force something together or apart. Today it is made from stainless steel and a variety of other materials with a handle to make it more useful.
Many different tasks can be made much easier through the use of a type of tool that is intended for that task. There are many different selections to choose from to make your job easier and faster. For example, a rake will help gather debris in a garden or gather leaves in the yard. Many years ago these tasks would need to be done by picking up the items individually and placing them in a bucket or something of that sort.

Home Made Hand Tools For Hobby Foundry Work
If you have been thinking about making a start in hobby foundry work in
your home workshop, you may be forgiven for thinking that the tools and
equipment are going to cost you an arm and a leg, this need not be.
Sure, you could trot off to the downtown industrial tools supplier and
take home an arm full of expensive tools.
But if you take a good look at some of the tools, you'll discover that the design principles and fabrication could well be undertaken in the home workshop if you have metal fabrication skills and a reasonable amount of basic metal working equipment.
Take for instance "crucible lifting tongs", once you understand how these tools operate; you could quite easily make a set or two over a weekend. The basic design action operates on the "scissor principle" but they don't cut anything, they are designed to "clamp securely" onto the crucible to lift it out of the furnace when the metal has melted. Great caution needs to be taken while carrying out this operation, as one slip due to faulty or badly designed tongs, and you could have a disaster on your hands.
The best way to design and build a set of tongs is to copy a well made set, or to follow directions set out in a textbook or ebook downloaded from the net, we'll give you some links a little further on in this article.
Some of the most frequently used basic tools you'll need in the hobby foundry are; Bench ramming moulders tool - Tube sprue cutter - turned wood sprues - slick & oval spoon - hand riddle or sand sieve - draw pins, screws & hooks - rapping bar and spike - gate cutter - strike off bar - sand carving tools (made from old hacksaw blades).
The tools mentioned above seem to be the ones that will be most used in your hobby foundry... and all of them can be home made if you have metal & wood working skills, it will take time and effort to make the tools required but they wont cost you a red cent if you make them from scrap materials, and if you are like most hobbyists you will know where to "scrounge stuff".
You may have to experiment with different ideas before you arrive at the most satisfactory design, but you will learn a great deal about why things have to be made in certain ways.
Do you own a wood lathe? Even a most basic machine will suffice in the home workshop, you could even make your own if you were keen enough,I guarrantee there are tens of thousands of home made wood lathes sitting in hobby workshops the world over. A wood lathe will repay itself many times over when you start to make patterns for your hobby foundry.
Your bench-ramming tool can be quickly turned to shape on your wood lathe, in fact, while you're at it, make two or three of them in different shapes & sizes, they will all come in handy when ramming and moulding patterns of differing sizes, you could get away with a single tool, but you wont regret making extra tools.
After a pattern has been completely rammed in a sand mould, and before the metal is poured, the pattern has to be removed without disturbing any of the surrounding sand. Draw pins and spikes are used to remove timber patterns from sand moulds.
Simple draw pins can easily be fabricated from long slender wood screws, particleboard screws are ideal. The easiest way to convert woodscrews into draw pins is to braze-weld a short length of 1/4" dia mild steel rod onto the head of the screw...that is all you need to do... make a set of them with different gauge screws as well long and short ones and you should have the field covered as far as lifting pins or draw spikes go... simple isn't it.
Blunt hacksaw blades are usually thrown in the bin, from now on you should save them, as many useful little hobby foundry tools can be made from old saw blades, quite often small sand carving tools can be quickly made by grinding and shaping using a normal bench grinder.
By being resourceful and thinking how you can use scrap materials, you should see now that there is absolutely no need to spend large amounts of money to get the tools and things you need for your hobby. If you are not sure about your own building & fabricating abilities then you should always ask advice.

Restoring Old Hand Tools
Disassemble and clean
To start work on an old tool, I begin by taking it completely apart. This lets me check the condition of all the parts and makes them easier to clean. I'll clean most parts with a mild detergent solution, and if pitch and resin have built up, I'll scrub this away with a cloth or nonwoven abrasive pad dipped in acetone, mineral spirits, or lacquer thinner.
Remove rust
Next, I'll tackle any rusty areas. Depending on whether it's surface rust or heavily pitted, this can require anything from scrubbing the part with a Wonderbar (a great product) to using a wire brush, or even the magic of electrolysis.
Removing rust with electrolysis
Here's a slick way to remove rust from your tools using, of all things, electrolysis. Electrolysis passes a small electrical current from a battery charger through a rusty tool that's submerged in an electrolyte solution.
An exchange of ions takes place, and the rust flakes away. Here's how to do it. First, mix up an electrolyte solution (1 tablespoon of baking powder per gallon of water) in a nonconductive, plastic container. Then, remove any nonmetallic parts from the tool. Now clamp the positive (red) lead of a 2-amp battery charger to an anode-an anode is just any large, flat piece of steel (like a kitchen pan lid). And connect the negative (black) lead to the rusty tool.
Slip the rusty tool and anode in the solution so they're a few inches apart. Make sure the tool is completely submerged and the red clip that's attached to the anode is above the solution to prevent it from corroding.
Turn on the battery charger, and check that it's not drawing more current than it's rated for (this is where a built-in ammeter is indispensable). If it is drawing too much, or not enough, current, move the tool father away or closer to the anode. (SAFETY NOTE: make all of the adjustments with the charger unplugged!)
You can tell it's working when you start to see bubbles forming on the surface of the tool. The average tool will de-rust in about two hours. Turn off the charger, put on rubber gloves to remove the tool, and unfasten the clips. You'll find a lot of black crud on the tool.
The quickest way to remove any crud is with an abrasive pad. Just scrub the surface with a pad dipped in warm, soapy water. If the rust is gone, you're done. If not, repeat the process until it is.
Sharpen parts if necessary
If the tool employs a part with a cutting edge, I'll sharpen the edge using my standard sharpening technique.
Reassemble
When all the parts are clean, free from rust, and sharp (if applicable), I'll put the tool back together. As I do this, I'll add a drop or two of light machine oil to linkages and will usually apply a coat of paste wax to cast-iron surfaces to help prevent future rust. If the tool has wood parts (like the plane shown here), I'll usually apply a light coat of tung oil to them to help keep out dirt and grime. Then on to the best part - using the tool - what better way to spend an afternoon in the shop!
