Woodworker Tools

In my last article I talked about the basics of wood selection for a woodworking project. In this article, we will discuss the tools needed for woodworking project. As in any thing we do, whether it is fixing or repairing things around the house, using the right tool is always the universal rule rather than the exception. It is important to realize that using the right tool not only gets the job done correctly but also gives you safety in your work.

The range and list of woodworker tools can be quite huge and elaborate. To buy every piece of woodworker tools out there will cost you a hefty sum or may even punch a large hole in your bank account. The woodworker tools can be generally categorized into 3 basic types:

Hand tools
Power tools
Machinery

Hand tools are basically tools which you operate with your hand without any external power or electricity. These will include tools such as hammer, chisel, saw, level, try square, triangles, tape measure, sandpaper and rasps. Power tools and machinery must be operated using external or portable power source. These electric-driven tools are definitely more expensive, though some of the portable power tools are quite affordable. Portable power tools allow you to be more flexible and mobile when you are working, rather than worrying about entangling of the cables and wires around your workspace. In addition, power tools and machinery will definitely speed things up for you in your project. And, some of the machinery will allow you to do fancy works, which otherwise would be difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish using only hand tools.

For a beginner woodworker, it's not necessary to have a complete set of tools to start your hobby. You only need a basic set of hand tools. Hand tools can go a long way in your woodworking craft even without power tools or machinery. Here is a list of basic tools for the beginner woodworker:

Claw hammer
Wood chisels
Screwdrivers
Levels
Try Square
Framing Squares
Triangles
Tape measures
Sandpaper
Screws and Nails
Clamps
Hand Plane
Vises
Rasps
Glue
Carpenter's Pencils
Safety Glasses or Goggles

The list of woodworker tools above should be sufficient for any beginners to start working on their hobby. Please do not overlook the last item, safety glasses, on the list. Though safety glass is not a tool, it is absolutely necessary to wear them whenever you are using tools or doing work which is potentially dangerous. We will cover this aspect of woodworking in future article.

Compare your prices before you buy your tools. If you are serious about woodworking as a long term hobby, it will be wise to get a good set of tools which will last you for years.
